Welcome to Modern Mediation!
Thank you for considering using my services to resolve your divorce.
I think you’ll find that divorce mediation is a practical, lower cost and lower stress alternative to employing separate attorneys.

Sarah English Wallace, Esq., Attorney and Professional Divorce Mediator
Why is Divorce Mediation so Powerful?
There are a few reasons that divorce mediation is the right alternative for so many couples.
First, mediation puts you in the driver’s seat. In divorce litigation, it’s typically the case that lawyers fight tooth and nail over every detail of the case, regardless of the inefficiencies of time and money. If your attorneys cannot reach agreement, a judge decides all the answers. Where does that leave you? A bystander to your own divorce.
In contrast, in divorce mediation you and your spouse make all the decisions. The mediator helps to create respectful dialogue, offers solutions and suggestions to disagreements, and can . Does it mean that every decision is simple? Of course not. But you will have made decisions that are and that you know you can live with.
Second, divorce mediation can produce much lower stress than litigation. Litigation is essentially stylized war. It is a lot of adversarial posturing, inflated demands, and coercive tactics such as threats, which cause a lot of unnecessary stress in the divorce process. Mediation, however, is more attentive to client needs - especially for sensitive listening, objective feedback, and a personal connection with a neutral lawyer. Is mediation right for every couple? No, but for many couples, a private, confidential settlement is a positive outcome.
Third, divorce litigation is often quite costly. There are usually double retainers: each spouse’s attorney often requires one. Furthermore, there can be years of harsh negotiations, stalemates, delays, and drawn-out discovery problems. Much of the cost of divorce will be controlled by your spouse or their attorney’s goals.
Mediation is different. You own the agenda. This is your time, and this is your process. The better able you are to reach agreements with your spouse, the lower the overall cost of your divorce.
My Spouse and I Don’t Get Along. Can We Mediate our Divorce?
I have successfully helped many couples who have trouble communicating or dealing effectively with anger, resentment and grief as they move through the divorce process. You might be feeling sometimes that you are absolute bitter enemies and won’t talk to each other. Know, however, that it’s possible to mediate separately through a technique called “caucusing”, where the mediator goes back and forth to facilitate communications and exchange proposals.
I have found that even couples who feel deeply betrayed by one another can use mediation to make mutual decisions about life moving forward. Getting support and guidance can help you be able to work with each another enough to make good decisions for yourselves and make plans for a new life. As a professional family mediator, I am trained to help couples navigate tough situations and stay focused on the future.
Why is Modern Mediation a Good Choice to Mediate your Divorce?
I enjoy helping individuals see their own power in a situation and to use it constructively. It’s a privilege to help people deal effectively with a traumatic period in their lives and reach decisions that will impact their families for many years. Divorce is almost never easy, but it can be made easier through mediation.
I’ve helped to guide couples through transitions for nearly a decade. Before I became a mediator, in what now seems a prior life, I guided couples and competitive ballroom dancers to become more proficient partners for one another. While it may seem unusual to compare dance partnering to divorce mediation, I have found there are some similarities. In each instance, I have been guiding couples through a complex set of challenges to reach a final, mutually agreeable destination.
One final thought. Even if you are a do-it -yourself (DIY) kind of couple who knows roughly want you want from your divorce, you may find it useful to work with a divorce mediator. I can help you to make sure that you’ve covered the minimum of provisions that a judge would likely want to see in order to find that your agreement is fair and reasonable, and grant the divorce.
